Photographer Charlotte Dumas takes animal portraits – but this isn’t your average ‘pet’ photographer – far from it. Dumas’s subjects are exclusively working animals, and she uses only film photography. Horses are a recurring focus for her projects, as well as dogs, but she has ventured into wilder territory, photographing wolves and tigers.
Her images are surprisingly serene, and are the result of an incredible amount of patience. Dumas always remains in close proximity to her subject, believing in a genuine relationship between herself as a photographer and the animal portrait she is taking. I greatly enjoy her heartfelt work, in particular the four horse portraits she took at the mounted police unit of Rotterdam, The netherlands.
