Photographer Olive Dean has shared a few words with us about her work: My work is inspired by nature and all its forms, including my tiny garden where I sometimes work. Nature provides us with all the best designs even in the most mundane of surroundings. Plants, Rocks, lichens and waste-ground already surround us; the only requirement is closer observation, skill most of us have forgotten (except artists!) with our busy lives.
The “grand vista” on canvas as such is not my aim but I would never preclude an interesting landscape : subject matter should always be open to change from the artist’s point of view. Texture and pattern in the original source is becoming more important. In the transition from sketchbook (or photo) to final work, the images often become semi-abstracted in colour and form.
In recent months I have been involved in alternative photography, producing lumenographs and cyanotypes, again inspired by my love of plants. The lumenographs are done using plant material placed directly on photographic paper and solar exposed; this is often a challenge in the East of Scotland where I live!
